Guide to Tactical Knifes

Bob Mantel here for One of the most convenient and easily carried personal defense items that you can have is a tactical folding knife when we talk about tactical folding knife it doesn’t have to be some purposely weaponized thing all it has to be is something that you can get into action quickly for your personal defense so first let’s talk about the attributes of a good folding knife for personal defense first thing you need is a blade that allows you to cut and puncture effectively if it doesn’t do both it’s a wrong answer you want to make sure you have both those capabilities you also need to have good overall strength of the knife and typically on a folder what that means is that you’re gonna have a good strong locking mechanism another element is a clothing Clinton what you want is a clip that allows you to clip it to the top of your pocket or the inside your waistband so the knife is always carried in a predictable position so you can get it out when you need it the other aspect of being able to get it out quickly is some type of feature that allows you to open it one-handed now that may be a thumb stud it may be a disc or my favorite which is a hole through the blade allows you to simply get a purchase with your thumb push with the thumb and open it very quickly one-handed now the final attribute said there were five total the final attribute of a good tactical folding knife is that you need to have a training version of that same knife that replicates all the mechanics of the knife replicates everything except the sharp edge in the sharp point what this allows me to do you notice that it’s read its purpose design of easily identifiable as a training knife it allows me to practice all the mechanics of being able to draw and open the knife get it out quickly and make safe contact with a partner now once you’ve chosen a knife once you have something that you’re comfortable with what you need to do is quantify what you can actually do with it you need to understand the capabilities of it but in general if you look at something like a folding knife with about a three inch blade this is gonna be legally permissible just about everywhere so what you need to understand now is what this thing will actually do as far as performance on targets you also need to understand what targets you can effectively go after based on that performance one of the things you’ll often see is the idea that people recommend oh I’m gonna thrust into the torso or I’m gonna cut this guy attacking the vital organs here and if that’s gonna take him out of the fight first of all that is not a direct route to stopping power what you have to do is affect the body parts that actually allow him to be a threat to you attacking this is not a direct route to that they also need to look at the fact that if he’s wearing this jacket I have to figure out what this knife will actually do to it so let’s take a look at that what I’m gonna do is I’m gonna do a cut across this we’ll see what kind of effect we get on the coat itself and see if we can actually reach the underlying area that was a good powerful cut I did make it through the jacket I did get down to the area underneath but that was a shallow cut a cut like that although it certainly may be unpleasant for him is not something that’s gonna take him out of the fight this does not have a high degree of stopping power built into it so one of the things you’ll see us doing as far as our application of knives and personal defense is focusing a lot on the quadriceps muscle at the front of the leg the quadriceps is basically the muscle that allows you to extend your knee if this muscle is cut especially within the first six inches or so above the knee what it does it takes away your ability to extend that leg and also your ability to support weight on that leg what we’ve got here is a good facsimile of it this is about a three to four pound pork roast I’ve butterflied it wrapped it around a wooden dowel and tied it on with some heavy twine the replicates connected to connective tissue like ligaments and tendons we’ve then wrapped it with about 20 layers of plastic wrap so what you’ve got is a pretty good simulation of skin with muscle tissue underneath we take a pant leg and put it down over this we now have a very accurate representation of what we have as far as the human quadriceps let’s see what a three-inch blade will do to this as you can see no problem as far as going through the material itself we pull this up see a nice clean cut but is literally all the way down to the bone this is what we want by separating this muscle tissue by taking this muscles function away we also take away the function of the leg we take away the attackers mobility and that’s what allows us to create distance and to create safety now to up the ante even more one of the considerations you have any time you have clothing over something you may have a very loose pant leg a lot of gangbangers will have loose pants like this not only allows in the concealed weapons but it’s also a form of armor so we do is what’s called a comma cut with a comma cut we come in on the inside of the leg and then once we’ve achieved penetration by going in perpendicular to the clothing here what we do if we cut the underlying tissue let’s see what that looks like so we go in with a knife here and we turn and comma cut so we’ve got here again is a very significant wound got the entrance that came in here and then it turned in the flesh and cut down to the bone all the way down this way this is exactly the kind of cut that you want this also helps you avoid that idea of the pant leg moving and dissipating the force of the cut taking away the effectiveness of the cut now anyway you look at this stuff this is pretty graphic but it’s also a necessary part of your learning curve and a necessary part of your best defense.
